2005 Recaps

Reds16 Dodgers6
The Reds kicked off the 2005 season in style. Joel got the start, and promptly struck out the side in the first inning, allowing the bats to go to work - in a big way. Meaghan singled, Brady singled. Joel and Sean added hits, scoring a pair of runs. Newest Red Jerome hammered a hard line drive into right field, scoring 2 more. Samson, after swinging left-handed on deck and in practice, turned around to bat right-handed and promptly singled. Then last-batter Victoria picked up her first career hit, slamming a ball to right field, and managing to scamper home on a Dodger throwing error. 7-0 Reds. Joel pitched a second scoreless inning, with some help from C Meaghan, who retired a runner trying to steal 3rd. The bats continued to boom, with Meaghan and Brady collecting their second hits, Marcus picking up his first, and Reema delivering an RBI triple. Jessica also reached base twice in her first game, via the walk and the HBP. Defensively, 2B Victoria stood out with a pair of great pickups, and Samson did well in his debut at first base.

Reds14 Dodgers5
The Reds jumped out to an early lead, using good patience and baserunning, as they waited out an erratic Dodgers starter. Brady got the start and pitched two solid innings, showing an improved fastball over last time. The offense continued to roll, piling up walks, but also mixing in some timely hits from Marcus and Meaghan. The big hit of the day belonged to Keyon, as he sent a shot to left field with the bases loaded as the last batter of the inning. Both Keyon and Sean made their pitching debuts, and both received help from their defence. 3B Marcus hauled in a pop fly, while Victoria continued to shine at second base, knocking down everything. 1B Meaghan had the play of the night, alertly turning a shallow pop fly into an unassisted double play.

Reds14 Cardinals12
A slugfest against the previously unbeaten Cards. Joel got the start and pitched into some trouble, but escaped with just a run against him. Keyon continued his solid hitting, this time out of the leadoff spot, and started a big rally against the Cards starter, as the Reds plated 5 in the first inning. The defense was quite solid, and the outfield was particularly alert. The Cards have some big hitters, but the OF tracked the ball quickly and didn't allow them to take extra bases. Jessica was particularly good at this, hustling and hitting her cutoff man consistently. Speaking of big hitters, Marcus had a huge game at the plate. He singled in the first, and would later steal home. He would later double and triple, both times with the bases loaded, for 5 RBIs. Alas, his pitching wasn't quite as solid, as he plunked 3 Cards in 2/3 of an inning and had to be replaced. Sean picked him up for the save, and Brady, making his first appearance at catcher, ended the game by snagging a wild pitch and meeting an aggressive Cardinal runner at the plate.

Reds13 Dodgers8
This game was Victoria's coming out party as a hitter, as she toasted an RBI double to right field and later had a clutch bases-loaded single. (She would later play as a call-up with the Cardinals and pick up 3 more hits). Jerome also chipped in a key base hit. Brady shut the Dodgers out for two innings, pitching his best ball of the season, as the offense racked up a big lead. The Reds escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third, as Marcus kept a sharp grounder in front of him and shovelled the ball to Victoria covering at second in time to end the inning. SS Brady would later make an outstanding play on a slow roller to throw out a Dodger batter by a step. Though she wasn't rewarded with a hit, Samantha had a pair of excellent at-bats and it's only a matter of time until she starts to pound the ball.

Reds14 Yankees9
This game didn't start on the best note, as Joel struggled a little on the mound. He reached two strikes on about half a dozen batters, but couldn't put them away, and the score at the end of a half inning was 5-0 Yankees. Joel singled to lead off the Reds half of the inning, and eight batters later, the score was 5-5, largely thanks to the walk. Brady relieved and settled things down with a scoreless inning, allowing the Reds bats to go back to work. Marcus had a couple of hits, Victoria continued to swing the bat well, as does Samantha, as she sizzled a ball back to the pitcher. Joel enjoyed good at-bats all game, though he hit a couple right at Yankees. Sean chipped in an important RBI single to help pad the lead. The defense was a little rough at times, throwing the ball around, but Reema continues to make good progress behind the plate, and some solid pitching by Marcus helped hold off the Yankees.

Reds14 Cardinals12
Just 8 Reds were on hand for this game. Joel started off a first inning rally with a walk against a strong, but erratic Cards pitcher. He ended the inning with a solid single up the middle, capping a 4-run Reds rally. Joel held the Cards in check through the first inning, but the humidity got to him in the second, and he had to be relieved. The pitching held together and the Reds pulled out a close one.

Reds14 Yankees10
Another short-handed effort by the Little Red Machine. Fortunately, Samson arrived halfway through the first inning to give us an 8th player. The defense in this one was quite good. Both Samantha and Jessica were very solid at 2B, while Samson was excellent in his first extended stint at 1B.

Dodgers11 Reds7
We got off to a slow start in this one, and after a couple of silent innings with the bats and some unfortunate defense, we were down 9-0. Despite a spirited comeback, we couldn't quite overcome the Dodgers lead.

Reds16 Yankees10
Our pitching wasn't the sharpest in this game, but the defense helped keep the game close and the bats provided enough support, highlighted by Meaghan slamming a bases-loaded triple to the hill in left field.

Reds12 Dodgers10
This game didn't start out much better than our last outing against the Dodgers, and once again we found ourselves down big early. This time, the bats clicked, and some big hitting by Marcus and Meaghan brought us all the way back.

Reds8 Yankees8
This game was played on the larger Peewee diamond. Victoria and Sean pitched, and while neither has much experience, both looked solid and kept the game close. After the Yankees took a brief lead, the bats bounced right back, with 4 base hits in the span of about two minutes. This game featured more solid defensive play from 2B Jessica, 1B Samantha and C Brady.

Reds16 Yankees15
A wild game that saw the Reds claw their way back from an early 10-1 deficit. Brady's booming bat (say that three times fast) was the catalyst of the comeback, as he chipped in three hits, the biggest an in-the-park grand slam hit to the scoreboard in centre field, completing the comeback.

Cardinals8 Reds5
The Reds were short-handed in this one, but we used the opportunity to try some of our younger players at different positions. Victoria pitched against a tough Cardinals lineup and did quite well. She didn't get a ton of support from the bats, and the Cards hung on for the win.

Cardinals12 Reds10
As has been the pattern this season, the Reds got down early in the this one, but the resilient bats showed up. Sean continued his impressive power display with a couple of hits and Samantha, after hitting the ball solidly but having little to show for it, came up with her first base hit. It definitely won't be her last.

Reds20 Yankees9
Reds whaled the ball throughout this game, but the most memorable moment has to be some very creative baserunning by Brady and Joel. With last batter Jessica at the plate, the two - normally very fine - baserunners, decided to try a double steal out of nowhere and very much without the coach's consent. Thanks to some hesitation and crossed-signals, they managed the rare feat of both getting thrown out on the same play.

Reds12 Dodgers7
Joel pitched a solid two innings and Marcus chipped in with an alert, unassisted double play as the Little Red Machine continued their strong play.

Reds10 Cardinals10
This was a fantastic game featuring some great defense by both teams. Meaghan and Brady combined on a key double play, while the offense just kept coming back. Some well-timed hitting, including a triple by Marcus and a clutch base hit from Keyon wiped out deficits of 7-3 and 9-7 and gave the Reds an 11-10 lead in the final inning. Unfortunately, curfew elapsed and the score reverted to a 10-10 tie, but that was enough to clinch first place.

Reds16 Cardinals15
As a reward for her recent willingness to swing the bat, Jessica got to pitch in this game. She lasted the maximum two innings, striking out one of the bigger Cardinal hitters and making a nice play on a pop up to help her cause. The offense jumped out to a huge lead, but we got a little ragged on defense and nearly gave it all back. sean and Keyon also pitched in this one, and Victoria came on for the save.

Playoffs
Reds19 Yankees10
A nice way to open the playoffs. 1B Sean played a great game, our defense was solid, with players alertly backing each other up. Brady tossed his standard two solid innings, while Marcus came within inches of a home run to right field.

Reds25 Yankees7
Wow. This game featured a club record for runs in a game. Marcus was excellent on the mound, striking out 6 in two innings. Brady was once again solid in relief. The story of this game, obviously, was the hitting. Nick had a 2-out double in the first and later added an RBI single. Samantha, Meaghan, Victoria, Brady, Marcus, Sean, also added multiple hit games - that adds up to a tremendous amount of hits, and a 2-0 lead in the series.

Yankees8 Reds7
A great little game. The Yankees pitching was quite a bit stronger, as they welcomed back one of their top hurlers. The Reds didn't have their full lineup, but still managed to play a great game that came right down to the final out. With runners on second and third and two out in the bottom of the final inning, Victoria, one of our youngest hitters, had a terrific at-bat. She fouled off a couple of full-count pitches, including a shot that landed just foul down the right field line, before finally striking out.

Yankees17 Reds5
The Yankees tied the series with a very strong effort, while the Reds looked a little rusty. Brady pitched well, but our other pitchers were erratic, allowing a lot of baserunners. At the plate, our bats have picked a bad time to go a bit cold. On to the deciding Game Five.

Yankees15 Reds9
A better effort than our last game. Our pitching was shaky from the beginning, with pitchers perhaps trying to throw a little too hard. The Yankees jumped out to an early lead, mostly thanks to walks. The Reds battled back, and the bats were much more lively than last time, but while we narrowed the gap, we could never quite catch up. Full credit to the Yankees, who improved from game 3 on. They went on the defeat the Dodgers in Championship.
